Project 3 - Illustrator as Author
Brief -
In this project you will consider the potential of the illustrator as author. You will explore the practicalities of this pathway and you will demonstrate examples of your own work within these contexts. In this short project you will create a collection of work for direct sale whilst considering a number of industry factors.
Steps:
1. Research the world of 'illustrator as author' or illustrators who sell 'personal' work online. What sort of work are they selling? What formats are they selling the work in? Is the process as simple as making some images and slapping them on 'stuff' or is it more considered?
2.Explore ideas for a subject that satisfies both your own personality and which may realistically find a home amongst an existing community.
3. Develop a collection of illustrator authored work, part of your development is to focus on the outcome, not just the illustrations. e.g. my initial plan might be to produce a hardback book - thus I will have to consider page size and type content. In other words, in this example illustrations are only a part of what I'm doing, I'm also designing a book and all its content.
4. Your outcomes should be presented in such a way as to make your intentions clear and believable.
You will need to create promotion for the work. This could be in the form of social media posts which give information and get the word out, better still, it could be a video of you creating or talking about the work.
Aims:
Explore the world of illustrator as author and the importance of speculative work
1. Research - This could be identifying existing communities who might be interested in your work.
This could be identifying prints and production opportunities. Identifying the processes of getting your work printed / produced. Cost implications etc.
2. Communication - Recognise the role that social media and communication skills play in the success of illustrator as author. Creating the illustrative content is only the tip of the iceberg.

Inprnt is a site that artists can use to sell their artwork, since it also handles the printmaking, shipping and customer service aspects of the shops as well. This means all an artist has to do is upload their work to the site, who will then handle to creating and shipping aspects when artwork is ordered.
At Inprnt, the artist keeps 50% of the entire print sale price.
All of the prints are made with 100% cotton rag acid-free paper that features a 'smooth natural white finish' and 300gsm paper weight.
I personally have three prints from Inprnt hanging on my wall, and I quite enjoy the quality of the paper. The only thing of note is that there is a 25mm x 30mm white border around the prints' edge.
Another aspect of Inprnt is that your work has to be reviewed by the community of artists before you can be set to sell on the site. To sell on the site, you have to submit your favourite 3 works before they are reviewed and voted upon.

Critical Role is a Dungeons and Dragons actual play web series that predominantly streams on Twitch and Youtube. Played by a group of professional voice actors, Critical Role has turned from a live streamed home game to an international phenomenon that has seen live shows and has seen episodes played in movie theatres as well.
The Critical Role website describes themselves such:
What began in 2012 as a bunch of friends playing RPGs in each other's living rooms has evolved into a multi-platform entertainment sensation, attracting over half a million viewers every week. Now in its third campaign storyline, the show features seven popular voiceover actors diving into epic adventures, led by veteran game master Matthew Mercer.
The show started streaming partway through the cast's first campaign in March 2015. Campaign one ended in October 2017 after 115 episodes, and campaign two started in January 2018 and ended in June 2021 after 141 episodes. A number of one-shots were aired in the hiatus between the two campaigns. After campaign two was completed, the limited series Exandria Unlimited aired from June 2021 to August 2021. The third campaign premiered on October 21, 2021.

Animated TV show kickstarter
|
|
On the 4th of March 2019 Critical Role began a 45 day Kickstarter in a hope to gain some monetary aid in producing a "fully animated half an hour special" about their first live streamed campaign, Vox Machina. They teamed up with the animation house Titmouse to create this short episode, as well as industry writers such as Jennifer Muro. |
However, what they didn't expect was the absolute tidal wave of support and backers for the show.
On the 4th of March they launched the kickstarted with the goal to reach $750,000 in 45 days. Less than 24 hours later, they had $3,888,435, and with still another 44 days left on the kickstarter.
At the end of the kickstarter they had $11,385,449, and enough money to fund a 10 episodes of a 12 episode animated series, which eventually was picked up by Amazon Prime.

"They're rowdy, they're ragtag, they're misfits turned mercenaries for hire. Vox Machina is more interested in easy money and cheap ale than actually protecting the realm. But when the kingdom is threatened by evil, this boisterous crew realizes that they are the only ones capable of restoring justice. What began as a simple payday is now the origin story behind Exandria’s newest heroes."
|
In November of 2019 before the series even premiered, the series was renewed for a second season, which is set to air in January 2023. On the 6th of October 2022, The legends of Vox Machina was renewed for a third season.
