Thumbnail Visuals

Brief - Working on A3 sheets, generate 40 different thumbnail ideas for a portrait format theatre poster. They should be approximately 60mm tall and should contain the title of the play as well as an indication of where information such as the dates and venue are to be placed. Spend no longer than ten minutes on each. Then select five of the best and refine and develop them. Finally select the best three from this group of five and work them up as more detailed client visuals. You should exploit the same materials as previously but should double the size to approximately 120mm tall.

Your visuals will be for a play selected from this list:
Peter Pan                                                     Sweeny Todd
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof                                Assassins
Hedda Gabler                                             A little Night Music
Look Back in Anger                                    Blithe Spirit
The Seagull                                                 The Woman in Black
The Importance of Being Ernest              The Man Who Came to Dinner

For this project, I chose the musical Sweeney Todd. I had never watched or listened to the musical before, but it was the play I knew the most from the list. For research I watched the movie starring Jonny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, while taking notes, and then listened to the musical multiple times. Taking the notes of the film and musical allowed me to see which elements were used in both mediums, and allowed me to come up with some interesting initial ideas as they came to me.

The first dozen thumbnail ideas came to me quiet easily, but then I started to struggle with the others. However, I googled other existing Sweeney Todd posters, which helped inspire me with more ideas.

Refined idea 1
Picture
I chose this thumbnail to refine as it incorporated elements of both Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett, the two focal characters of the play. It leans away from the bloody nature of the play, and focuses instead on the objects that represent the main characters, displaying them like an advertisement.

Refined idea 2
Picture
I chose this thumbnail to refine because of it's simple but distinctive silhouette.

Refined idea 3
Picture
I chose this thumbnail to refine because of it's simplified and minimalistic form.

Refined idea 4
Picture
I chose to refine this thumbnail because of the split duality between Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett, showing that the play is about the both of them and their story.

Refined idea 5
Picture
I chose to refine this thumbnail because of the dynamic push on perspective that is used.
