Font Selfie

I was inspired by nature to create my letter, and incorporated elements that reflected this aspect into the piece, such as scales, waves and flowers. I didn't really have an idea of what to expect when I started creating the letter, but after doodling the wave element, I was easily struck with the idea to continue with the sea and nature theme.

I then realised that these are all prominent elements in Japanese art, and especially in traditional Japanese tattoos, so I decided to colour the letter incorporating this style.

I looked at examples of traditional Japanese tattoos and found that they all have a very similar colour pallet, using blacks, greys, blues, and the occasional red and orange, which I used to differentiate between the flowers which are the land elements, and the waves, which represent the sea.

2 becomes 1

Pick two letters or numbers or a mix. Create nine 7cm-7cm compositions where you can combine the two characters in a dynamic way within the square. Explore scale, repetition and rotation within the composition but do not stretch/squish or distort the original type form. Each design should employ two unique typefaces and be made of single vector form. If you know how to use the pathfinder tool to cut the overlapping shapes out, then please do this, otherwise just overlap in black and white. If you have finished one task within the allocated time, move on to the other one. Once you have completed the task, save your work and upload the results to your blog/website.

Select 4 exercises to create from this list of opposites:
Regular/Italic
Letter/Number
Serif/Sans Serif
Uppercase/Lowercase
Black/White
Letter/Punctuation
Choose a few typefaces to work through the task with. Start with an A4 page and fill it with your opposites combinations. The aim is to bring your two opposites characters together to create interesting shapes. Try at least 4 four different shapes per opposite pair. Arrange them neatly on the page. Rules: The two characters must touch. They can be rotated but not stretched. Stick to a point size of approximately 120pt-130pt.

Huge Heteronyms

Choose two sets of heteronyms and produce a typographic solution for each set that clearly explains the two different meanings of the one word as a single, integrated composition in a vertical A4 format. You should initially work by hand in your sketchbook on small-scale ‘thumbnails’ and then moving to the computer only when you have a good range of ideas to explore.

You are only allowed to use digital type to communicate meaning. NO pictorial imagery. There are no restrictions placed on colour and how it is used. Try to limit the range of faces you use (the simpler the better) and really think about composition. Use faces/fonts intelligently, experiment with different ones and select the most appropriate. Make sure you save digital files as you go along so we can see how your ideas developed. You are not allowed to digitally alter the proportion of any face/font (stretching/squashing). This is a type crime and you will be punished!
